One key challenge is the lack of English exposure in STEM subjects at school level, limiting learners’ vocabulary and confidence in academic and professional contexts.
This book addresses that gap by introducing Mobile English for STEM (ME4STEM), a module designed to enhance English vocabulary competency among STEM learners. Grounded in English for Specific Purposes and developed using the ADDIE instructional design model, the module offers a structured and practical approach to language learning tailored for STEM contexts.
The development process involved three phases: analysis, design and development, and implementation and evaluation. Initial findings revealed that learners recognise the importance of English but struggle primarily with vocabulary. They also showed strong preference for interactive learning methods such as quizzes, audio-visual content, and problem-based activities, as well as readiness for mobile learning.
Based on these insights, the module was designed using a combination of learning theories, including mastery learning, constructivism, and multimedia learning. It was evaluated by experts, refined through pilot testing, and later implemented with over 500 STEM learners.
Findings demonstrate high usability and strong learner acceptance, highlighting the effectiveness of ME4STEM as an innovative approach to supporting English learning in STEM education.
